What Does it Take to Start a Winery?

The first seven years of a winery are back breaking and hard work. A smart entrepreneur will have a solid foundation of resources and financial backing. Plus the help of the Good Lord, to get him through all the changing seasons with the right weather and climate. It is a good idea to get in touch with a Guiding Farm Agent, or maybe even a neighboring vintner may help guide him in the steps necessary for a fruitful harvest.

During winter months, heavy flooding of the vines is needed, whether through rain or irrigation. If the rains do not come, be prepared to irrigate by purchasing large water pumps of at least five horsepower or more. Be careful not to over flood. Good irrigation and water level control is important.

The next step is pruning and cultivation. Many vintners use the same pruners year after year as technique and timing are important. The pruner needs to have a plan with each vine he prunes. To know which vines need to be kept back and which vines are ready to progress to a pattern that will develop good root stock. A solid root stock and good firm limbs help to produce quality grapes. Better grapes make better wines, and better wines make better sales distribution.

Barca Wineries

Our grapes are grown in the Napa Valley, Lodi, Fresno, Santa Barbara, Southern California, Baja California, France and Italy. Our grape lands and vines have been cultivated to a point of perfection. We limit our label's to a very few distributors. Barca wines have won several gold, silver and bronze medals around the world.

Future Trends

Taste and varieties change from generation to generation and decade to decade. As modern advances are made in equipment and techniques newer varieties of grapes will be found. New and different blends will be tried creating lower alcohol content in some wines and fruitier flavor in others. The wine industry will grow as the beer and coffee industries have. Variety will be the key.

Barca Techniques

The Barca family grew roses in front of every vine. A different color for each variety of grape. The grapes have been planted and blended with techniques developed over centuries and passed down through the generations.
